Birthdays!

6 Months and counting

Yesterday it was 6 months ago that Lucas was born. A good time for reflection. We went for the first larger excursion since his addition to our family, with him in a very cool rucksack. He sits very well and holds his head perfectly so no problem at all (also before it was too hot for excursions). We also lunched at the chinese conveyer-belt restaurant. So you could say our life is pretty much back to ´normal´ (also I have been at congresses, drinking with friends, cinema). I have to say that the first 3 months were tough, mostly because of the lack of sleep, and 16 weeks maternity leave is no luxery. But, like all parents say, it is definitely worth it.
The biggest change having a baby is the lack of time and the increased organization in your life. Every thing needs to be planned and scheduled, who brings the baby to the creche, who takes him back, who can work longer in the afternoon etc. And I realize that I owe a lot to my partner who is very good at taking up his part of the tasks. In my opinion here lies the clue to emanicipation of women (at work): in the sharing of tasks between the two parents. In Spain there is definitely an issue (as I noticed this morning at the pediatric who said he thought all mothers should be at home taking care of their children (paid by the government) to prevent drug abuse and crime later on in life). As there is in Holland as well judging on what I read although a bit different. But at least in Spain the community is very friendly and open to children, something I miss further up north.
